6 Ways to Save Money on Gas This Summer – Tips for RV Owners

Planning a road trip in your RV or travel trailer this summer? Check out these helpful tips for maximizing fuel efficiency on your next adventure!

Keep Your Rig in Peak Operating Condition

With gas prices on the rise, savvy RV owners are getting creative when it comes to finding ways to cut back on overhead and reduce fuel costs. Although many gas-saving hacks exist, it should come as no surprise that the best way to maximize fuel efficiency is by properly maintaining your vehicle.

Tip #1: Maintain Your RV to Achieve Maximum Fuel Efficiency

TIRES: For starters, you should always check tire pressure before each trip and continue to monitor while traveling. Don’t cheap out when it comes to buying tires for your RV or travel trailer. Although it may seem more cost-effective at first, you’ll end up spending more money on gas and repairs in the long run.

MAINTENANCE: It is especially important for RV owners and vehicles towing travel trailers to follow recommended maintenance schedules including regular oil changes and tune-ups. Believe it or not, something as simple as a faulty oxygen sensor or dirty air filter can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 10%! Click here for an RV Maintenance Checklist.

Tip #2: Resist the Urge to Overpack

Every seasoned RV owner is acutely aware of how tempting it can be to utilize every inch of storage by cramming supplies into every nook and cranny. Unfortunately, the more your rig weighs, the more gas it will take to get from point A to point B. That’s why it’s always good to get into the habit of purging unnecessary items before AND after each road trip. Avoid overpacking and be mindful of items that may accumulate along the way.

Tip #3: Slow and Steady Saves the Gas

60 MPH RULE: The joy of RV living is the freedom to go anywhere and experience life at your own pace. Slowing down not only allows time to enjoy the scenery, but reduced speeds can save a ton of gas! Many RV owners choose a maximum speed limit of 60 MPH to reduce wear and tear on their rig and improve fuel efficiency. Click here for RV Mile Per Gallon FAQs.

SMOOTH TRAVELS: RV and travel trailer owners can lessen fuel expense by allowing ample time to come to a complete stop as well as accelerating with ease.

CRUISE CONTROL: Gas-saving features such as cruise control and overdrive have a significant positive impact on fuel efficiency when traveling on flat terrain.

Tip #4: Plan Your Route Ahead of Time

Plan your route ahead of time and consider choosing roads with less traffic, fewer hills, etc. to save money on gas while traveling in an RV or pulling a travel trailer. When possible, avoid driving during times of high traffic to prevent excessive idling. Also, running the cab AC consumes a lot of gas, so start early and avoid traveling during the heat of the day.

Tip #5: RV Life is all About Balance

An unbalanced rig is not only a safety concern, but an uneven distribution of weight also strains the engine thus requiring more gas to operate. To avoid wasting gas and putting unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle, distribute heavy items throughout the body of your RV or travel trailer.

Tip #6: Choose Extended Stay RV Parks

There are many benefits of extended-stay RV parks including reduced rates. Set up camp at an RV park that offers extended stay options to cut back on fuel cost and reduce time spent on the road. If high gas prices are of great concern to you, you may want to consider choosing a long-term campground within proximity to your home base.

BONUS Tip: Download the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest gas in your location.
